And that&#8217;s what this post is all about.<\/p><p>While you could have all kinds of reasons for wanting to create your own board game, most of our clients look to set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qinprinting.com\/blog\/how-to-crowdfund-board-game\/\">crowdfunding campaign<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200ausually on Kickstarter\u200a\u2014\u200aand self-publish their game for profit. For that reason, the focus of this post is on that aim. But you&#8217;ll still find it useful even if you don&#8217;t have commercial ambitions. The core principles are the same across the board\u2014pun intended!<\/p><p>First up, let&#8217;s deal with the fundamentals, the most basic questions of all. Like, what is a game? And more specifically, what is a board game? You may think the answers obvious, but if you can&#8217;t formulate a succinct, clear answer, how can you be sure that you really know what a game is?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f367263 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f367263\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is a board game?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2851cc9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2851cc9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A game played on a board! Okay, very smart. But not nearly enough. You see, to really understand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qinprinting.com\/blog\/what-makes-good-board-game\/\">how to create a good board game<\/a>, we&#8217;ll need to dig down a little deeper to uncover what makes a game recognizable, what makes it work, and what makes it a thing people choose to spend the precious moments of their lives doing. We won&#8217;t bore you with the dictionary definitions: Merriam-Webster, Collins, Harvard, and Oxford; they&#8217;re all freely available online or in your local library.<\/p><p>So, the &#8220;official&#8221; definitions you can discover for yourself. They don&#8217;t really matter to us. What really interests us here, is what we might call &#8220;the gamer&#8217;s definition&#8221;. Now, to get to that definition, we need to line up the five interrelated aspects of a board game that are necessary for it to function, to be what it is.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2c2628f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2c2628f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>A fun activity undertaken by people (the player or players)<\/li><li>An attempt to achieve an objective (win!)<\/li><li>Limitations and constraints on action and\/or information that make it difficult to achieve the objective<\/li><li>An interactive experience involving varying degrees of luck, strategy, and decision-making<\/li><li>An experience that is &#8220;embodied&#8221; in a range of components\u200a\u2014\u200athe most fundamental being some form of board\u200a, fixed or modular\u200a\u2014\u200aon which the game is played<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c4ea510 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c4ea510\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>To have anything you can really recognize as a board game, it must involve all of these aspects. Take one away and the game would no longer work; no longer even be a board game. Think about it:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-66c587c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"66c587c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Even if there&#8217;s only one player, the game must involve that player taking action; otherwise, they&#8217;d just be day-dreaming or observing someone else playing<\/li><li>The actions must be purposeful\u200a\u2014\u200athey need to be aimed at achieving something. If not, it would be insanely random and meaningless<\/li><li>But equally, players can&#8217;t do anything and everything they want to get to the goal or the game would be over before it began; so actions must be limited and constrained<\/li><li>The players must interact\u200a\u2014\u200aeither with the principles of the game, with each other, or both\u200a\u2014\u200aand make choices and decisions, even if there&#8217;s a degree of luck involved in the outcomes, by which they may win or lose. Without options and strategy, it would be more like watching a movie or reading a book than playing a game<\/li><li>Last\u200a\u2014\u200abut not least\u200a\u2014\u200athere must be a board and other components which &#8220;embody the game&#8221; or while it might still be a game, it wouldn&#8217;t be a board game<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a738449 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a738449\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>So, this definition is very important. Why? Because it reveals the core elements that you&#8217;ll need to make sure you include when you&#8217;re designing and developing your own board game. They can be summed up in terms that may be more familiar:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-791b3e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"791b3e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol><li>A number of players (even if it&#8217;s just one!)<\/li><li>A goal\u200a\u2014\u200atechnically known as &#8220;the win condition&#8221;<\/li><li>Mechanics\u200a\u2014\u200athe range and type of possible actions<\/li><li>Rules\u200a\u2014\u200athe limitations and constraints governing the mechanics<\/li><li>Components\u200a\u2014\u200aessentially a board; but also dice, cards, meeples, counters, coins, and more<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-12764e7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"12764e7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It&#8217;s the last factor which makes a board game a board game and not some other kind of game. Everyone is familiar with the mainstream board game industry. They&#8217;re the companies like Mattel, Hasbro, and Ravensburger who publish and distribute &#8220;household name&#8221; games such as the classics <em>Monopoly<\/em>, <em>Clue<\/em>, <em>Risk<\/em>, <em>Scrabble<\/em>, <em>Trivial Pursuit<\/em>, <em>Ludo<\/em>, and the rest. These are available in the major stores and heavily promoted with traditional advertising campaigns especially during the run up to the holidays, for example.<\/p><p>On the other hand, unless you&#8217;re a keen gamer\u200a\u2014\u200aand you probably are if you&#8217;re reading this!\u200a\u2014\u200ayou may not have heard of even the most famous, bestselling independent games such as <em>Pandemic<\/em>, <em>Dominion<\/em>, <em>Magic<\/em>: <em>The Gathering<\/em>, <em>Mysterium<\/em>, <em>Hive<\/em>, or <em>Terra Mystica<\/em>. Still less, <em>Gloomhaven<\/em>, <em>Scythe<\/em>, or <em>Lost Cities<\/em>. But if you check out the gaming forums, blogs, and podcasts\u200a\u2014\u200anot to mention your backstreet independent game store\u200a\u2014\u200ayou&#8217;ll discover literally hundreds, even thousands, more.<\/p><p>It&#8217;s with the independent board game world that we&#8217;re concerned here. These are games which come up from the grass roots community of passionate players and game designers and developers grounded in that community. These are people\u200a\u2014\u200alike you\u200a\u2014\u200awho are driven by passion, excitement, and a sheer love of board games. Most of the games are crowdfunded\u200a\u2014\u200aprimarily on Kickstater as it&#8217;s become the go-to resource for the board game community\u200a\u2014\u200aand distributed to backers, sold directly through independent websites, or through small, local game stores.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d035ae7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d035ae7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why do people play games?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d9375cc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d9375cc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>And this brings us to another vital thing to understand before you get started on designing and developing your own board game: why people play. Because the people who sustain the independent gaming world are committed, serious players, even while the first objective is always to have fun. People play games for the same reasons they go to the movies or read books: for excitement, for escape, to learn about themselves and others, to take risks and have experiences they would never take or have in real life. They also play to test themselves, to build their skills, and to increase their knowledge. But for many, board games are also about social interaction, making friends, and being part of a community.
